Should I create a 4K DCP

Post by funkytwig »

Someone asked me to create a 4K DCP. Not done one before (or purpose at least) but wondering if I should advise them to just get a 2K one.

Is there really any point? If they do want a 4K one, would they also get a 2K one?

Done some digging, and it seems the answer seems it will not make much difference. If I do a 4k one should I also do a 4k one?

In terms of screening a 4K DCP on a 2K system, one doesn't need to create another (DCP). The player "disregards" the extra resolution layer (have a look on JPEG2000 compression, so you understand what I mean). If one doesn't mind the extra data (that shouldn't be much more, hardly 50% for keeping the same visual quality while upscaling) it's fine to do a 4K. Doubling the resolution and quadrupling the pixel number will make a difference, given that the (4K) screen will be big enough and/or the viewer will be close enough, and/or the image will have high contrast, high detail parts. It wouldn't make much of a difference on talking heads.
If a client or a friend wants to "invest" on higher resolution, though, there is no concrete argument against it. So, why not...?
